In zunehmendem Maße rücken Materialien und deren effizienter Einsatz in den Fokus der Entwicklung. Dabei wird sowohl nach Ersatz für teure oder knappe Rohstoffe gesucht als auch die Recyclingfähigkeit der Materialien höher bewertet. Der Oberflächentechnik wird eine hohe Wachstumsdynamik, allerdings bei stark regionalem Charakter zugeschrieben, wobei der Automobil- und Maschinenbau die vorrangigen Einsatzgebiete sind. Trotz guter Rahmenbedingungen liegt Deutschland bei der Umsetzung von neuen Technologien nicht unter den innovativsten Staaten der Erde. Hierfür müssen vor allem die Beziehungen zwischen Forschung und industrieller Anwendung verstärkt werden.

It is increasingly the case that materials and their efficient utilisation are being more intensively studied. Such studies include a search for alternative materials for those in short supply as well as the recyclability of materials being used. Surface Finishing technology is seen as one exhibiting dynamic growth, albeit of a sectoral character. The automotive and machine building sectors are foremost in such advances. Notwithstanding a highly favourable climate for innovation, Germany is not among the most innovative countries in the world in terms of adoption of new technology. What is most important in this context is a strengthening of relationships between Research and Industrial Development.
