Über Gift, Giftigkeit und Giftwirkung - oder: Warum man die Himbeere nicht künstlich herstellen darf
Die zunehmende Diskussion im Zusammenhang mit dem Umweltschutz und die erhöhten Auflagen zur Verwendung von Chemikalien - vor allem durch REACH - führen zu einem unsachlichen Gebrauch von Begriffen, beispielsweise über Gift und Giftigkeit. Dabei wird übersehen, dass in vielen Fällen extrem kleine Mengen von synthetischen Stoffen zum Einsatz kommen. Zudem enthalten Pflanzen und Tiere oftmals Verbindungen, die im modernen Sinn als Gifte gelten müssten, für den Menschen aber in den vorliegenden Konzentrationen keineswegs giftig sein müssen.

The continuing discussion relating to environmental protection, coupled with increasing regulations governing the use of chemicals, above all in terms of REACH, have led to a confusing proliferation of terms, for example those relating to Poison and Toxicity. In many cases, this can involve extremely small quantities of synthetic products. In addition, animal and vegetable matter can also contain compounds which, in present day terms, must technically be ranked as potentially toxic. However at the concentrations in which they occur, these are not harmful to humans.
